Manatee Rib Bone

Tallied Crescent Banner

  5   1/4"

Suwannee Co. Florida

Comments: Among the rarest of relics is the Banner or Atlatl weight.

This one is crafted to resemble the Mississippi Valley Crescent Banner.

Suitable stone with which to manufacture Banners was hard to

obtain in Florida so this resourceful artesian used a fossilized

Manatee Rib Bone. The drill hole is nearly 1/2" in

diameter and the bone is decorated on both sides

with carved lines or Tally marks. I counted over

20 lines on one side and over 28 lines on the other.

I personally only know of one other Banner

made of Manatee Bone and it was

 a simple short straight piece

of rib with a drilled hole.

TOOLS

Tools do not garner the attention and admiration of many collectors,

but the Native Americans certainly could not have survived without them.

Tools were used for a multitude of purposes

such as processing food and clothing

working various media such

as bone wood shell and plant material.

I personally love tools and collect fine

 examples whenever I can.

They are generally affordable and

tell much of the story of our past.

Tools are rarely offered on the net,

but I hope you enjoy this group.
